Home Builders Energy Efficient Money Saving Tips

Spray Foam Insulation

Spray foam insulation is one of the most efficient and cost-effective means to seal your home from air and moisture leaks. It will also increase structural integrity, and improve air quality by protecting your family's health from dangerous mold, airborne pollutants, and allergens.

In addition, spray foam insulation provides better insulating properties and a higher R-value that allows the use of reduced capacity HVAC systems, which saves on construction costs and lowers your monthly utility bills. It provides a quieter, more comfortable and more energy-efficient home that will save you money year after year.

Traditional home building methods use vented attic and crawl spaces to manage the heat transfer and moisture surrounding your home's living spaces. The US Department of Energy (DOE) studies show that 40% of your home’s energy is lost due to air infiltration. This air infiltrates the home in the form of drafts through walls sockets, windows and doorways. Traditional fiberglass insulation is only stapled, or placed into the wall cavities and does not seal the stud and wall cavities from end to end, or top to bottom. Air infiltration can pass through these gaps, making it far less efficient.

Modern building techniques take a different approach. Spray foam insulation adheres to and forms to the walls and floors to create a tight seal and insulating barrier that stops this air leakage. Spray foam insulation seals the entire “building envelope” of your home to prevent air and moisture infiltration. It can be sprayed in crawl spaces underneath your house to seal between the floor joists and along the foundation walls to eliminate air gaps, leaks, mold and most pest problems. It can also be sprayed on the underside of the roof and floor in the attic space to eliminate the presence of hot air in the summer, and cold air in the winter, which makes your HVAC work harder and wastes energy and raises your electric bill. It also has the highest R-value per inch than any other commercial material.

You can achieve a 30% energy savings by using spray foam insulation when compared to traditional fiberglass insulation systems. These new energy savings can provide a cost recovery in as little as 5 years.
